Complete guide to ROI Calculator

What is ROI?

ROI (return on investment) is the percentage gain or loss on an investment relative to the amount invested. It is calculated as (Current or final value minus initial investment) divided by initial investment, times 100. A positive ROI means a profit; a negative ROI means a loss. ROI is one of the most common metrics to compare investments or business projects.

This ROI calculator requires only your initial investment and the current or final value. It gives you the ROI percentage and the dollar profit or loss. It does not account for the time period — for annualized returns over multiple years, use the CAGR calculator.

When to use ROI

  • Comparing one-time investments or projects.
  • Measuring performance of a stock, mutual fund, or asset after a period.
  • Evaluating business decisions (e.g. marketing spend vs revenue).
  • Quick comparison when the time period is the same for all options.

Limitations of ROI

ROI does not consider the length of time the money was invested. A 50% return in one year is much better than 50% in 10 years. For multi-year returns, use CAGR (compound annual growth rate) to get an annualized return. Also, ROI does not include taxes, fees, or inflation.
